Stepdad who impregnated girl gets life

A Covington man who started having sex with his stepdaughter when she was 10 and impregnated her at age 13 was sentenced to life in prison Monday. State Judge Elaine DiMiceli of the 22nd Judicial District in Covington sentenced the 59-year-old man to life for aggravated rape and to 20 years for aggravated incest.
The man entered the courtroom smiling and had no reaction when the judge read the sentence.
Aggravated rape, which includes sexual intercourse with a child younger than 12, carries a mandatory life sentence.
During a one-day trial March 24, the gray-haired man's stepdaughter testified that the man she knew as a father brought her into his bed to have sex most mornings before school. She said he told her he was teaching her about sex.
After discovering that his stepdaughter was pregnant, the man took her to an abortion clinic, where doctors said the pregnancy was too far along to terminate.
The girl's mother, believing her daughter became pregnant after having sex with a classmate, persuaded her not to put the baby up for adoption and agreed to raise the child herself.
The sex continued until, at age 17, the stepdaughter broke down and told her mother's divorce attorney about the abuse. Blood samples taken from the baby and the stepfather revealed with 99.99 percent certainty that he is the father, a doctor testified.
The man's name is being withheld by The Times-Picayune to protect the identity of the stepdaughter, who is now 20.
