Woman jailed in porn crackdown

Published: Aug 16, 2004 - 07:29 PM

A CHINESE court has jailed a woman for four years in what local media say is the country's first conviction in a nationwide crackdown on internet pornography. Wang Yanli was convicted by the Feng County People's Court in China's eastern Jiangsu province for operating an audio-visual internet chatroom which charged visitors for viewing strip shows, state television said Sunday
The report said between December 2003 and February 2004 Wang's internet chatroom attracted about 110 members who paid annual fees of up to 600 yuan ($100) to watch a nightly live four-hour "lewd show" organised by her.

Wang reportedly made a profit of more than 30,000 yuan in the three-month period.

Separately, China's biggest mobile phone operator China Mobile said it would intensify its crackdown on pornographic websites which use its short message service for communicating with clients, Xinhua said Sunday.

China has launched a nationwide crackdown on internet pornography since July 16 and has so far arrested hundreds of people and shut down about 700 websites.

The campaign reflects Chinese authorities' growing concerns about the negative influence of the internet on the country's youngsters, many of whom make up the country's 80 million-strong and still growing number of internet users.
