James Cornell Clark pastor charged with demanding sex from woman

Published: Jun 18, 2006 - 08:00 AM

LEVELLAND, Texas A 54-year-old former Lubbock pastor has been indicted on charges of compelling prostitution. James Cornell Clark allegedly demanded sex from an African woman he brought to the U.S. with the promise of a college education. He was indicted yesterday by a Hockley County grand jury. Clark remained in the Hockley County Jail today on 150-thousand dollar bond.
Clark allegedly approached the 21-year-old woman last August while on a trip to Kenya and offered to bring her to the U.S. so she could attend college. He enrolled the woman at South Plains College in Levelland, where officials said she hoped to pursue a nursing degree.

But when she arrived in the U.S. in January, Clark allegedly demanded the woman repay him by performing sexual favors. That's according to court documents. When the woman refused, he threatened to have her deported.

Hockley County District Attorney Gary Goff said Clark was arrested in April after the woman reported him to campus police.
