A Brockton teacher accused of e-mailing two female students pictures of his genitals is out of jail today and also out of work. Less than two months after being hired as a Brockton High School science teacher, Charles M. Everett, 21, was canned Thursday and arrested shortly afterward for his alleged Internet activity.
Authorities say he sent 14- and 17-year-old Brockton High students the image, which his father told Fox-25 was taken in the family home's basement.
``A student came to a counselor with information about it on Wednesday and the high school administration contacted the police,'' said Jocelyn Meeks, spokeswoman for the Brockton Public Schools.
Police seized Everett's home computer, from which he allegedly sent the girls the picture by way of an Internet chat room. Neither of them were his students.
Everett, who grew up in the neighborhood, was ``psyched'' to be able to return to his home city for his first job teaching, said neighbor Thomas Lentini.
``We never had any, any problems at all with him,'' said Lentini. ``How do you explain that?''
He learned of the charges from the family, who came over to the Lentinis' house to break the news before they heard about it through the media.
One neighborhood boy was disturbed to learn about the charges against Everett, who was his Boys and Girls Club counselor four years ago.
``I was shocked,'' the 12-year-old said. ``I didn't think he would do that.''
Messages left at Everett's home were not returned.
After pleading not guilty to two counts of disseminating harmful materials to minors, Everett was released on personal recognizance Thursday from Brockton District Court, said Plymouth Assistant District Attorney Bridget Norton Middleton.
He was also ordered to stay away from the high school - which is also his alma mater.
After graduating from Brockton High in 1999, Everett enrolled in Louisiana's Tulane University.
Counseling was made available yesterday to the alleged victims and any other affected students at Brockton High.
``At this point, we're trying to focus on education,'' said Meeks.
The Brockton Public Schools checked Everett's record against the state's Criminal Offender Record Information database but found nothing.
