Authorities say a Murphy police officer thought the man he spotted rooting through a trash bin might try to break into a business.

Instead, Officer Jeffrey Postdale had arrested longtime fugitive Eric Robert Rudolph.

Murphy police Chief Mark Thigpen says Postdale and other officers didn't initially recognize Rudolph. And the man initially identified himself as Jerry Wilson and gave a different birthdate.But Cherokee County Sheriff Keith Lovin says that when the man was taken to the sheriff's department, a deputy thought he looked familiar.

The F-B-I confirmed Rudolph's identity through a fingerprint match.

In addition to the blast at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Rudolph is charged in bomb attacks at a gay nightclub and an abortion clinic.
