LOS ANGELES - Jenna Jameson's PR Department has been working full-time this week, getting out the news that the blonde superstar was getting her own billboard in (arguably) Times Square.
The 48-foot high advertisement debuted at 2 p.m. (EST) on Broadway between 47th and 48th Streets, which New Yorkers probably wouldn't consider to be actually "Times Square," which stops at about 45th Street ? but what the hell; Californians are far enough away that the difference isn't very noticeable.
What is noticeable, however, is Jenna's claim that her likeness is "the first-ever ... to feature an adult entertainment actress" on a Times Square billboard. Uh-uh; sorry ? Ginger Lynn was there first.
We got an e-mail from erstwhile porn actor/director Taliesin, who plied his trade on the Great White Way back in the '80s, who reminded us that, "Back in the mid-eighties, a billboard in Time Square featured John Holmes and Ginger Lynn, the two biggest stars at the time. The billboard promoted a movie starring the two. Somebody got the idea that it would be great marketing to put John and Ginger together, and it was promoted bigtime, including using the billboard. I think the title of the movie was Girls On Fire."
A call to Ginger herself confirmed that Tal's recollection was correct. Girls On Fire debuted in 1984, and the billboard went up nearly concurrent with that film's theatrical release.
Actually, there were apparently several billboards featuring porn stars in Times Square in the late '70s and early '80s. Actress Kelly Nichols remembers at least a large cut-out of Amber Hunt from VCA's A Coming of Angels on a theater marquee in '77, as well as what she thinks were billboards for Chuck Vincent's Roommates and Jack & Jill in '82. But Girls On Fire was definitely a billboard.
But the controversy got us wondering, what else might Ginger have done first?
A little research turned up the following startling coincidences:
?I Dream Of Ginger, a send-up of the hit TV show I Dream Of Jeannie ? released 1985
?I Dream of Jenna, a send-up of the hit TV show I Dream Of Jeannie ? released 2002.
?Club Ginger, an adult Website owned by and devoted to world-famous porn star Ginger Lynn ? established 1986.
?Club Jenna, an adult Website owned by and devoted to world-famous porn star Jenna Jameson ? established 2000
? E! True Hollywood Story featuring Ginger Lynn ? fourth highest-rated episode of the series
? E! True Hollywood Story featuring Jenna Jameson ? rating figure not available, but reports are that so far, the show has yet to find its "legs."
Is someone following in someone else's footsteps?
BTW, look for E! True Hollywood Story's "Porn Star Week," featuring Ginger, Jenna, Traci Lords and John Holmes, coming soon to a TV near you.
